Just changing planes? Do you need a visa at KUL?

International connections within the same terminal stay airside with no Malaysian visa needed.

Changing terminals

KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 (the former klia2, used by AirAsia) haven't been linked airside: moving between them has generally meant clearing immigration and entering Malaysia. An airside link was due to start in 2026, first for passengers without checked bags, so ask your airline how your connection works.

Going on to a domestic flight

Connecting to a domestic Malaysian flight usually means clearing immigration at KLIA.

Separate tickets (self-transfer)

On separate tickets you have to collect your bags and check in again, which means entering Malaysia: submit the MDAC, and Nepali passports need a visa.

How long to allow

Allow at least 60 minutes in the same terminal, and 3 hours or more between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

Airport transit visa by passport

None of the 16 passports we cover needs a visa to change planes airside at KUL, on one booking with your bags checked through. Entering the country, for a terminal change through immigration, a domestic flight or separate tickets, follows the rules in the table above.
